Israeli police have raided a makeshift newsroom of the Qatari news channel Al Jazeera after it was announced earlier today that the country would close the news channel's offices.
Police raided an Al Jazeera office in a hotel in Jerusalem. According to the news channel, the editorial staff is based in East Jerusalem, which the international community views as occupied Palestinian territory. Video footage shows inspectors and officers entering a hotel room newsroom to seize broadcast equipment. The channel has now gone black in Israel. Al Jazeera has been a long-time 'thorn in the eye' of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, who now calls the Arabic channel "inflammatory" in a statement. The channel reports critically on the war in Gaza. Netanyahu said last month that he wants to ban the news channel from broadcasting from Israel. The Israeli parliament recently passed a law that paves the way for this. According to Al Jazeera, the channel could initially be banned for 45 days based on that law. Israeli Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi previously said that Al Jazeera would be banned because it serves as a propaganda channel for Hamas. “There will be no freedom of the press for Hamas mouthpieces.” Al Jazeera denies those accusations and says Israel is systematically attacking journalists in the Gaza Strip. Al Jazeera is one of the few international media outlets still broadcasting live from Gaza. The channel is funded by the Qatari government, but says it operates independently. The UN says it regrets the decision to close the offices. “Free and independent media are essential so that transparency can be guaranteed and accountability is ensured. Especially now, given the severe restrictions on reporting from Gaza.” The UN is urging the Israeli government to reverse the decision. The Blog Tags Widget will appear here on the published site.

Freedom of Press in the Netherlands is among the highest in the world, according to a report by campaign group Reporters without Borders to mark world press freedom day (May 3th).
The Netherlands, which fell to 28th place in the ranking in 2021 following the murder of television crime reporter Peter R de Vries, has risen to fourth position, behind Norway, Denmark and Sweden. The report points out that “Russian media in exile, such as the Moscow Times and TV Dozhd, have found a safe haven in Amsterdam”. But while press freedom is actively protected by the state and the government, “albeit more efficiently in continental Netherlands than in their overseas territories” the Dutch media are “under attack from populist parties on the far right and far left of the political spectrum,” the report said. The four parties currently in talks on forming a new government are planning to cut spending on the public broadcasting system, which could lose up to a fifth of its budget. “The less of the left-wing Liberal NPO noise the better,” said Geert Wilders, leader of the far right PVV. He has also called journalists “scum”. In particular, the report said, the polarisation of public opinion on issues such as immigration, agriculture and climate change has led to an increase in physical and verbal attacks against journalists, especially against TV crews and photographers. This, the report said, has led “some journalists to self-censorship and a reluctance to cover certain subjects”. In addition, abuse and trolling on social networks impact news gathering and dissemination with female reporters and journalists of colour especially vulnerable to such attacks. American journalist Tucker Carlson has released a 20-minute interview with high-profile Russian philosopher and political commentator Aleksandr Dugin. The conversation was published on Carlson’s YouTube channel on Monday. Western media have described Dugin as “Putin’s brain” due to his supposed influence on President Vladimir Putin and the Russian elite. A fervent critic of the West and a foreign policy hawk, Dugin passionately supports Russia’s military operation in Ukraine and has stated that an independent Ukrainian state “should not exist.” In 2022, his daughter Darya was killed in a car bombing, which the Russian authorities said had been orchestrated by Ukrainian agents. Several US media outlets subsequently cited unnamed US intelligence officials as saying that Washington believes that the Ukrainian authorities were indeed involved in the assassination. Carlson introduced Dugin as “a writer who writes about big ideas,” claiming that his books have been “banned by the Biden administration” in the US. “You cannot buy them on Amazon,” he said. During the conversation with Carlson, Dugin argued that liberal ideology, which became de facto uncontested in the West since the fall of the Soviet Union, is leading to the demise of the concept of families. “Family is [being] destroyed in favor of this individualism,” he said, adding that the natural progression of liberalism will lead to “abandoned human identity.” “Next phase: new liberalism. Now it is not about the rule of a majority, but it is about the rule of minorities. It is not about individual freedom, but it is about woke-ism,” Dugin said. “It is not democracy. It is totalitarianism.” The Blog Tags Widget will appear here on the published site.

The military regime in Mali prohibits media from reporting on the activities of political parties and associations. The ban applies to all forms of media, including television, radio, online and newspapers. The Malian junta yesterday banned all activities of political parties until further notice. This would be necessary to maintain public order. Analysts tell the AP that the decisions are probably the result of criticism of the military government from politicians and students, among others. In recent weeks, they expressed their frustration over the junta's inability to return Mali to democratic rule. The Malian junta came to power in a coup in 2021. The umbrella organization of journalists in Mali opposes the ban on reporting on political activities in the country. The organization called on journalists to continue reporting on this and encouraged them to "stay strong, stay united and mobilize to defend citizens' right to access information." The reason given by the Malian junta for the ban on political activities is that political discussions in recent months have led nowhere and would even undermine national security. But most likely there is more to it. This decree comes just over a week after eighty political parties and civilian organizations called on the military junta in a joint statement to organize elections as soon as possible. Mali's National Commission for Human Rights also said it was concerned about the ban on reporting on political activities. “Rather than calming the social climate, these restrictions on fundamental rights and freedoms could potentially create problems and tensions that the country does not need.” The Blog Tags Widget will appear here on the published site.
