The EU has launched a new investigation into Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, over its alleged failure to protect children from harmful content.
The European Commission, the bloc’s executive arm tasked with proposing new laws and policies, said on Thursday that it has opened formal proceedings to assess whether Meta may have breached the Digital Services Act (DSA) in areas linked to the protection of minors. Adopted in 2022, the DSA aims to create a safer digital space where the fundamental rights of users are protected. The commission is concerned that Facebook and Instagram’s algorithms and online interfaces “may exploit the weaknesses and inexperience of minors and cause addictive behavior, and/or reinforce so-called ‘rabbit hole effect,’” reads the commission’s press release. The ‘rabbit-hole effect’ refers to specific algorithms used by social media platforms. When a user looks at one piece of harmful content, the algorithms suggest more of the same, potentially leading them toward videos that become more extreme. Meta’s age-verification tools may also not be “reasonable, proportionate, and effective” to prevent minors from accessing inappropriate content, the press release stated. The commission said it will now carry out an in-depth investigation as a matter of priority. The opening of formal proceedings empowers the EU executive arm to take enforcement steps such as adopting interim measures and non-compliance decisions. Meta said it has “spent a decade developing more than 50 tools and policies” to protect children. The company wants “young people to have safe, age-appropriate experiences online,” Reuters quoted a Meta spokesperson as saying. Protection of children is a “challenge the whole industry is facing,” the statement added. Both Facebook and Instagram have more than 45 million monthly active users in the EU. In April 2023, they were designated by the bloc as Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs). As such, they have to comply with obligations set out in the DSA. The European Commission already opened a set of formal proceedings against Meta in April, looking into alleged deceptive advertising, political content, and election disinformation on Facebook and Instagram. The probes come ahead of the vote for the European Parliament scheduled for early June. DSA violations can lead to fines of as much as 6% of a company’s annual global turnover. The sale featured eight watches belonging to the seven-time F1 champion, who has not been seen in public since a skiing accident in 2013.
Among the watches were timepieces from Rolex, Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe. Eight watches belonging to Formula One legend Michael Schumacher raked in four million Swiss francs ($4.4 million; €4.1 million) at an auction in Geneva on Tuesday. The seven-time F1 champion was an avid watch collector. But he has not been seen in public since a serious skiing accident in 2013. The watches were put up for sale by Schumacher's family to coincide with the 30th anniversary of his first Formula One Drivers Championship win in 1994. "Collectors were so happy to discover these timepieces filled with history," said Christie's Head of Watches in Europe, Remi Guillemin. What watches were auctioned? The timepiece with the highest hammer price was a vintage pink Patek Philippe that sold for $2,711,500. Two of the other watches in the lot were personalized gifts that were given to Schumacher by Ferrari's team principal at the time the German drove for the Italian outfit, Jean Todt. One was a custom-made platinum watch from F.P. Journe known as the Vagabondage 1 that sold for $1,646,700. The watch features an 18-carat white gold and a red watch face emblazoned with a Ferrari logo, Schumacher's racing helmet and a number 7 to honor the driver's seven World Championship victories. The other was an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak chronograph with a bespoke dial that features a prancing horse the Ferrari emblem. It sold for $457,380. Three Rolex watches were also included in the auction, each selling for more than $300,000. The Blog Tags Widget will appear here on the published site.

Kiev wants TikTok’s help to counter Moscow’s “dominance” on the social media platform, one of Ukraine’s top information warfare officials said on Tuesday.
Russians are advancing in cyberspace as well as on the battlefield, Andrey Kovalenko, the head of the Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) at the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine, told the outlet. “Russia is dominating us on TikTok” due to the sheer scale of its effort, Kovalenko said. “We need to adjust our approach and consider focusing on this social network as well.” According to Kovalenko, the Russians are “working systematically,” creating fake accounts with Ukrainian SIM cards, and “gaming” TikTok algorithms to reach a wider audience in Ukraine. Meanwhile, there aren’t many Ukrainian creators on the platform, Kovalenko said. His own account, with 543,000 followers, features videos that “underscore Ukraine’s views on the war,” . Kovalenko has previously pushed back on demands by Ukrainian officials to ban Telegram, arguing this would be impossible and actually harm Kiev’s propaganda operations. He doesn’t favour banning TikTok either, but would prefer the company to open an office in Kiev to “help fight disinformation more effectively.” Ukraine has already forced TikTok owner ByteDance to ban 24 “pro-Russian” channels by complaining to its representatives in the EU, he added. Estimates indicate that only 25% of social media users in Ukraine have TikTok, while over 70% use Russian-made messaging app Telegram. By way of comparison, only 8% are on X (formerly Twitter). According to Kovalenko, the “disinformation” on the platform amounts to questioning President Vladimir Zelensky’s legitimacy. Videos by Russian “bots” are focusing on May 20, when Zelensky’s term is due to expire. Kiev has postponed all elections, citing martial law imposed due to the conflict with Russia. TikTok’s quarterly reports show that the company blocked 2 million videos in Ukraine during the last three months of 2023, suspected of being part of “covert influence operations” by artificially pushing either pro-Russian or pro-Ukrainian narratives. Kiev’s sudden interest in TikTok follows the passage of a bill in the US Congress that allocated some $61 billion in aid to Ukraine. Tucked into the bill was the requirement for ByteDance to sell TikTok to an American company or be banned as a national security risk. ByteDance has said it will challenge the requirement in court. Airports across the United Kingdom were struck with delays on Tuesday evening after a nationwide “technical issue“ made the UK Border Force electronic systems glitch for more than four hours.
The slowed service led to delays and long queues among arrivals in airports around the country. Footage circulating online showed the extensive queues that built up as services slowed to a crawl. Some customers complained that the unexpectedly long queues were straining infrastructure, reportedly leaving some customers without adequate water and toilet access. Others also showed blank screens at the eGates. Heathrow, Gatwick, Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester, Newcastle and Edinburgh airports confirmed problems with the Border Force system, which resulted in the long delays with arriving travelers on Tuesday, the BBC wrote. The system network issue was detected at 7:44 on Tuesday evening, the Home Office said in a statement on Wednesday. “E-gates at UK airports came back online shortly after midnight,” they announced, adding that “at no point was border security compromised and there is no indication of malicious cyber activity.” But it still stays open what really happened. There are 3 options:
In the course of the day it will clear which of the 3 really happened. The effected airports didn't give any update so far. The Blog Tags Widget will appear here on the published site.

It is doubtful there has been a more popular winner of a Formula One race in recent years than McLaren’s Lando Norris, who was celebrated by everyone from Max Verstappen to Donald Trump after his victory at the Miami Grand Prix on Sunday.
It was a long overdue triumph for Norris, who held the record for most podiums without a win (15), including an agonising eight runner-up finishes, in 110 grands prix, making the likable Briton easy to root for. Even Verstappen, Red Bull’s triple world champion who hates to lose and was denied a hat-trick of Miami wins by the McLaren driver, was among the first to congratulate Norris, who was mobbed by his team, crowd surfed along pit land and drenched in a shower of champagne. “It was a long time coming, and I’m very happy to be beaten by Lando today,” smiled a genuinely pleased Verstappen. “He definitely deserved it. “It’s great winning your first race. It’s always quite emotional. It brings you back to all the days that you worked towards your dream of being on the podium.” Former US president Donald Trump, who visited the McLaren garage before the race, was delighted to back a winner, telling Norris later he was his lucky charm. “He saw me after, and he came to congratulate me,” said Norris, who had told his grandmother before coming to Miami that he was going to win a race. “He [Trump] said he was my lucky charm because it was my win, but I don’t know if he’s going to come to more races.” Norris’ mother and father were ecstatic, though they were not in Miami to witness the moment. “The cider’s flowing in Somerset! A big celebration,” Adam Norris told Sky Sports. “I was working out, it’s probably about 900 races I’ve been to over the last 16 years. “It’s interesting knowing as a parent how many hours you put in, supporting them. “I counted out 350 weekends away and all the races on different weekends. “It’s brilliant. So happy for him.” Anthony Hamilton, another father instrumental in the success of his son — seven-times world champion Lewis — also texted Norris with congratulations. While Norris was long overdue for a maiden win his wait was not the longest. World champions Jenson Button needed 113 races before his first win and Nico Rosberg 111. Red Bull’s Sergio Perez holds the record of 190 races before his visit to the top of the podium and it took Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz 150 and Mark Webber 130. Norris was still finalising plans on how he was going to celebrate his maiden victory, but he was already thinking about a second win. “This only happens once when you take your first win. Tonight is going to be a good night,” said Norris, confirming team boss Zak Brown had delayed the flight home until Monday so there would be a proper celebration. “I would like to say it's the start, and now we’re really hungry for more. We'll keep our heads down and keep pushing.” The Blog Tags Widget will appear here on the published site.
