Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso will also drive for Aston Martin in the coming seasons. The 42-year-old Spaniard has signed a contract that commits him to the British racing team at least until 2026.
“Fernando is determined to be successful, is driving better than ever, fitter than ever and is fully committed to making Aston Martin a competitive team,” said team principal Mike Krack. "The F1 calendar is getting longer and I'm not getting any younger," said Alonso. "The sport consumes energy and dominates your life 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so you have to think about that carefully. It is quite a sacrifice, but I am very fit and feel that I can continue." Alonso's contract extension puts an end to speculation about his future in the premier class of motorsport. The two-time world champion was associated with a switch to Mercedes, where Lewis Hamilton will leave at the end of this season. In 2026, Aston Martin will switch to the engine from Honda, the supplier that is still responsible for the engine that Max Verstappen has been driving successfully with Red Bull Racing for years. Alonso insists this was a "key factor" in his decision to stay. "The world champion rides around with a Honda motorcycle, which gives confidence that things will go well." Hamilton's switch to Ferrari will not be the only transfer news this season. At least two-thirds of the current drivers have an expiring contract. An extensive game of musical chairs seems to be in the offing. The Blog Tags Widget will appear here on the published site.
